Indoor Air Quality

Whole-home air purifiers, air duct repair and new duct installation, attic insulation, and air quality testing for dust, pollen, mold spores and pet dander.

What is in the air, and where the house keeps it

Air that has been through a house a few hundred times carries what the house gives it: dust, pollen, mold spores, pet dander, bacteria and viruses. Douglas Mechanical lists exactly those as the things a whole-home air cleaner or purifier is there to deal with. The air handler moves every cubic foot of the home's air through the ducts several times a day, so whatever is in that loop reaches every room.

Ducts are where the loop most often goes wrong. In many Houston area homes the air handler and the duct runs sit in the attic, which in summer is hot and humid. A return duct with an open seam does not pull from the living space only. It draws attic air in through the gap, with its dust and insulation fibers, and mixes it into the supply. A torn or crushed flex duct delivers less air to the room it serves, so that room runs warm while the system runs longer. Damp, poorly circulated air is also where mold spores find somewhere to settle.

The third piece is the attic floor itself. Thin or uneven insulation lets the attic's heat load push straight down into the ceiling below, which makes the equipment work harder and makes the house less even from room to room. None of these three problems shows up as a single dramatic failure, which is why people live with them for years.

How an air quality visit works, from testing to the duct run

The work begins with evaluation. Indoor air quality testing and evaluation is one of the services, and it exists so the fix matches the house: a home with pets and shedding carpet needs a different answer than a home with a damp closet and a musty smell. The free in-home estimate is where that conversation starts, with no salesman on commission steering it.

A whole-home air cleaner or purifier is built into the system itself, typically at the air handler or return, so that all of the air the system moves passes through them and not just the air in one room. The filter rating on a system is usually described by MERV number, and a higher number catches smaller particles but also resists airflow more, which is why the cleaner has to be matched to the blower and the duct sizing rather than simply bolted on.

Air duct repair covers the physical faults: sealing joints and seams at the plenum, reconnecting runs that have slipped off their collars, and replacing flex duct that has torn, kinked or flattened. New duct installation lays out runs sized for the airflow each room needs, with the flex pulled straight and supported so it does not sag. Attic insulation installation then covers the floor above the ceiling, and only factory authorized brand name equipment and parts go into the system side of the job.

Keeping it clean after the work is done

An air cleaner is not a set-and-forget device. Filters and cleaning elements load up with the very particles they catch, and a loaded filter slows the air it was meant to clean. The honest routine is to follow the manufacturer's interval for whatever was installed and to replace the filter ahead of the dusty seasons, when pollen counts rise in spring and the cooling system runs flat out through summer.

The duct system and air handler are worth a look twice a year, and that is what the Silver, Gold and Platinum maintenance agreements are built around: biannual seasonal tuneups, correction of problems and issues found, scheduled service reminders and maintenance documentation. Members also get priority scheduling and discounted pricing on parts and labor, so a small duct or drain problem is caught before it affects the air.

Tighter ducts and a properly insulated attic also help the equipment itself. A system that does not have to fight leaky returns and a hot attic floor runs less, and less run time is less wear. Douglas Mechanical backs installation work with a one year installation guarantee and 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed, and if what you find at the estimate points toward the cooling side, repair and replacement are covered on the AC pages.
