Heating Installation
Trane heat pumps for year-round heating and cooling on one system. A heat pump can reduce heating costs by up to 50% compared to conventional systems.
One system for the January freeze and the August heat
A heat pump does not burn anything to make warmth. It moves heat, and a valve inside the outdoor unit decides which direction: out of the house in summer, into the house in winter. That is why one outdoor unit and one indoor air handler can handle year-round heating and cooling on one system, and why Douglas Mechanical installs Trane heat pumps for homes that want a single piece of equipment to answer for both seasons. Their published figure is that a heat pump can reduce heating costs by up to 50% compared to conventional systems. That is a general figure, not a promise about any one house.
Heating installs usually start with something worn out. A furnace with a cracked heat exchanger that cannot be run safely. A heat pump whose compressor has quit on an old, mismatched coil. A split system where the outdoor unit was replaced once and the indoor half never was, so the two no longer work as a pair. Replacing only the part that failed often leaves the weakest link in place, and the next failure arrives on schedule.
The other way installs go wrong is size. A unit too big for the house heats the rooms in short bursts, shuts off before the air has mixed, and wears its starting components out early. A unit too small runs on its electric heat strips all night, which is the most expensive way to warm a house. Sizing starts with the house itself, and the old nameplate only tells you what the last installer guessed.

How the work is laid out, from the estimate to the startup
It starts with a free in-home estimate. Douglas Mechanical does not employ salesmen and does not work on commission, so the person pricing the job has nothing to gain from a bigger unit than the house needs. Reviewers describe the owner, Jared, coming out to look at the system and staying involved through the sale and the follow up. Their own promise is that you never have to worry about hidden costs or surprises once the project is complete.
Then comes the equipment match. A heat pump system is a set: the outdoor unit, the indoor air handler with its coil, the matching heat strips, and a thermostat that knows it is controlling a heat pump instead of a furnace. Trane equipment goes in, and only factory authorized brand name equipment and parts are used. The thermostat gets set up and calibrated to the system, including smart thermostat models, since a heat pump that is told to call for backup heat too early gives away the savings it was bought for.
On installation day the old equipment comes out, the new outdoor unit sits level on its pad, and the refrigerant line set is connected. In a proper heat pump install that line set is pressure tested and evacuated before the charge goes in. The ductwork is checked where it meets the air handler, because a plenum that leaks or flex duct that is crushed in a tight corner robs a new system of airflow. Electrical is the last piece: disconnect, breaker and wire sized to the equipment. The startup measures the system in both modes, heat and cool, before anyone leaves.
The paper that comes with it, and what the first winter looks like
Qualifying installations carry a 10 year parts and labor warranty, a one year installation guarantee, a Price Match Guarantee and 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed. Financing is offered as Zero down, no interest, no payments up to 18 months*. *with approved credit. Multiple plans available. Ask at the estimate for the plans that fit the job.
The first winter has a few surprises worth knowing about. Air from a heat pump's registers is warmer than the room but not as hot as a gas furnace's, and that is normal. The outdoor unit will occasionally steam or drip when it runs its defrost cycle, which is the unit melting frost off its own coil. A heat pump runs longer and steadier than a furnace, so a system that hums along for hours on a cold night is doing its job.
What is not normal is ice that builds and stays, strips that run all day in mild weather, or a unit that blows cool air in heating mode. Those are the calls to make early, and the one year installation guarantee exists for exactly that reason. After that, the Silver, Gold and Platinum maintenance agreements bring biannual seasonal tuneups, so the heat pump is checked before each season and the warranty paperwork stays documented. When something does go wrong, heat pump repair and furnace repair are both services Douglas Mechanical offers.
