Generator Installation

Honeywell standby generator installations, as an authorized Honeywell dealer. Installation only: no generator repairs or maintenance.

A standby generator that was sized by guesswork

When the grid goes down in a Houston summer, the question is rarely whether a generator will start. It is what the generator can actually carry. A unit chosen by price or by the biggest number on the box can be too small for the air conditioner it was bought to keep running, or large enough to waste money and fuel on loads nobody needed covered.

Most disappointments trace back to the same few planning gaps. The loads were never listed, so the starting surge of a compressor was not counted. There was no automatic transfer switch, so the house depends on someone standing outside with a cord. The pad sits too close to a window, a fence or a wall. The gas line feeding it was never checked against everything else it supplies.

None of those are flaws in the generator itself. They are installation decisions, and each one is far easier to settle on paper before the unit is delivered than to correct after the concrete has cured and the lines are run. A good installer asks about the house before talking about the machine, because the right answer depends on what you want running when the lights go out.

Honeywell installations, and only installations

Douglas Mechanical is an authorized dealer of Honeywell generators and installs Honeywell standby units. In the company's own words, it focuses on generator installations only. Douglas Mechanical does not perform generator repairs or maintenance services, and this page does not offer them.

A standby installation starts with the loads you want covered: the air conditioning, the refrigerator, the well pump, a medical device, or the whole house. That list sets the size. Next comes an automatic transfer switch, which moves the house onto the generator when utility power drops and back again when it returns, so nobody has to do anything in the dark.

Then the physical work: a pad in a spot with the clearances the manufacturer requires from openings and structures, a gas supply sized to carry the generator along with the appliances already on the line, and the electrical connection from the switch to the panel. Permits and utility coordination are part of a job like this in general, and the details depend on the address and the local authority, so they are settled with you at the start rather than assumed.

After the install: who looks after what

Because Douglas Mechanical does not service generators, ask the right question before the unit is on the pad: where will the manufacturer's warranty work and any future repair or maintenance be handled? For a Honeywell unit, that is the manufacturer's authorized service network, not the installer.

Keep the paperwork from the day of the install together: the owner's manual, the model and serial numbers, the warranty registration, and the settings the unit was commissioned with. That folder is what the service network will ask for first, and it is much easier to assemble on installation day than three years later. It is also worth writing down which circuits the transfer switch covers, so a household knows exactly what stays on during an outage and what does not.

The air conditioning and heating in the same house are a different story. Those are Douglas Mechanical's everyday work, with technicians in the field 8am-8pm, seven days a week, so a home with a new standby generator and a Trane system can have its comfort equipment looked after by the same company that has been working out of Carrot Street since 1975.
